Finding your Wedding Photographer

CHOOSING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

In Indianapolis there are many wedding photographers. How do you find one to be a great match for your wedding day? Finding Wedding Photographers may seem like a daunting task so we have put together this brief guide to make your life easier.

Whether you are hiring Jeremy Haynes Photography or another company, here are few things to consider.

1. EXPERTISE - CREATIVE STYLE, QUALITY, AND CONSISTENCY

CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE

Photography style is very important and subjective to each individual couple. It is not a "one size fits all" mentality. There are many wedding photography styles to choose from such as: Photojournalism, Illustrative Photography, Portraiture, High Fashion, Natural Light, and more. Which photography style most interest you?
Jeremy Haynes Photography uses a blend of Fine Art and Photojournalistic Wedding Photography techniques to achieve the look that you see displayed throughout our website.

QUALITY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Equally as important is the quality of the photography. Every wedding photographer should use professional photography equipment to deliver the highest image quality. Lenses like the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8 are a must for weddings. See what is in our bag by viewing our equipment page
That being said, having a nice camera is not enough. Wedding photographers must balance both the creative artistic and technical sides of wedding photography with ease. If the color, exposure, positioning, and lighting are not properly cared for, then the quality will suffer greatly.

CONSISTENCY OF PHOTOS

Every wedding photographer must consistently, creatively, and uniquely capture weddings during a wide variety of moments and situations. People, rooms, moments, and lights are continually shifting. How will your photographer handle the harsh sunlight at noon or the dark indoors of a wedding reception? A blog is a great way to see the consistency of a photographer in action throughout the entire event. Jeremy Haynes Photography provides blog posts that show the entire wedding and engagement session instead of a portfolio of random photos for this reason.

2. PERSONALITY - THEY ARE NICE AND PERSONABLE

Out of everything covered so far this is probably the easiest to figure out. The question to answer is, "Do you like the photographer?" Ask yourself these questions to be sure.

PERSONALITY CHECK LIST

  1. Are they warm, fun, and friendly?
  2. Do they treat you professionally?
  3. Do they carefully listen to what you have to say?
  4. Do they answer your questions in a way that relaxes your concerns?
  5. Do they make you feel comfortable?
  6. Would your wedding day be better if they were a part of it?

A wedding photographer that checks off on this list will be a huge blessing to you on your engagement photo session and your wedding day.

3. EXPERIENCE - A LONG HISTORY OF WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Now that you have determined that you would be a good fit with the expertise and personality of the photographer, you must consider the experience of the photographer. Having the cumulative experience of many weddings, a professional photographer will know how to handle all of the moments of a wedding day even when things do not go according to the schedule or the plan. Consider how many weddings the photographer has photographed and how long he or she has been in the industry. While 15+ weddings will qualify a photographer as knowledgeable, most photographers are not considered professional until they have photographed over 30 weddings.

Also there is a great difference between a full-time wedding photographer and someone who owns a nice camera and does a few weddings a year on the weekend (also known as "the weekend warrior"). Someone who does photography part-time will not have the experience of a full-time photographer. Additionally you can more than likely not expect to see your images for a very long time, since the part-time photographer has a wider focused work load.

We have heard many horror stories of hiring "Uncle Joe" or a friend resulting in missed coverage ("Why not take a break during toasts and dancing?"), unusable quality of images, or the devastating loss of some or all of the wedding images. It happen frequently and way more often than you think. Invest in good photography to capture the most important day of your life.

4. PACKAGES - THEY DELIVER WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

Are you interested in engagement sessions, a first look on your wedding day, high resolution photos, online galleries, wedding albums, prints of your images, etc? Make sure that your wedding photographer has what you are looking for.

One of the main features that sets us a part from other studios is that all of our wedding photography packages include two wedding photographers. We believe that now matter how good a photographer is, he or she simply cannot be at two places at once. This is important especially when you consider that the bride and groom getting ready at two places, when the bride comes down the aisle and the grooms reaction, and other times when there is plenty of action. Additionally second photographers offer a completely unique perspective to your wedding day. They also help assist some unique lighting that we use from time to time to give your wedding images a exclusive stunning look that you won't find elsewhere.

Read our wedding package prices page to see everything included in all of our packages.

5. FEELING - WHAT DOES YOUR HEART TELL YOU.

The last thing we will mention is feeling. After you have read through these ideas and met with the photographer, does your meeting leave you feeling more comfortable and enthusiastic or unsure and concerned. Taking your time to find the right wedding photographer will help ensure that you have an incredible experience and wedding photos. We hope this brief guide for finding a creative wedding photographer has been a helpful resource to you.
